Lots of Driving, but LOTS of fun!
Today started out with our alleged 90 minute timeshare presentation. When we were told that in reality it would take at least 2 hours + breakfast, we decided to pay the $55 for our room (still a bargain) and hightail it on out of there. Instead, we had breakfast at Friendly's Restaurant and started down Highway 17S to Charleston.
Along the way we found a place called Pawley's Island. WOW! Across a marsh is a long sandbar with all these gorgeous homes. Even more spectacular is when you drive along slowly with the windows down and listen to a huge variety of birds singing. There were more different songs than we could count! The marsh is a wildlife protection area and I could have spent a long time trying to find the birds that were singing those beautiful songs. Check out the big white egret on the dropshots page.
As usual, we had our eyes peeled for Kingdom Halls and we were not disappointed. We saw two today, but only took pictures of one as traffic was too busy to get back to the other one. The picture here is between Pawley Island and Georgetown, SC. No one was there to talk to, but we saw from the sign that they have 2 English speaking congregations and a Spanish group.
The next cool thing we came upon was the Hampton Plantation (built between 1730-1750), a state historic site that was free to see. Unfortunately, the tours inside the home did not start until after noon and we were there around 10:20 a.m. so we didn't stay for that. The grounds were incredible though - the moss hanging from the enormous trees, fire pit and the long, long driveway up to the home (which I didn't get a picture of, but Shawn got video of).
We finally arrived in Charleston sometime after 1PM. Here is a place I could spend some time. The preserved history of this city is incredible. Homes dating back to the early 1700's (I put up a picture of one that was build circa 1712), cannons, centuries old architecture, cobblestone streets...I could go on. We only had a few hours here, so we made the most of it by parking the car and walking through the Church St. neighborhood to take pictures.
After sharing a pound and a half of garlic shrimp, fries and a salad at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, we headed up to Spartanburg as I have to be there tomorrow morning for commencement rehearsal. Only one glitch along the way - there was a car accident (we weren't involved) about 30 miles prior to arriving in Columbia causing major traffic delays. We waited for over 45 minutes in traffic. When we arrived in Spartanburg tonight at about 7:45 we were tired but happy. We've ordered a pizza and will spend the evening relaxing before tomorrow's rehearsal, exploring and dinner with my classmate Leah and her husband tomorrow night.
Good night to all!

P.S. A funny thing - down here County Coroners are ELECTED officials. Therefore they campaign. Best slogan we've seen so far - "Committed in Life and in Death"
